Old Mill Museum

At the very heart of Cavriana’s traditions lies a magical place, capable of whispering stories of a past that is not too distant but profoundly different from our present.
The ‘Vecchio Mulino e Antichi Mestieri’ Museum is not merely an exhibition, but a treasure trove of memories born of the deep-seated passion, patience and love for his roots of its founder, the former miller Dario Darra.

Housed within the charming premises of what was once a working mill, this extraordinary private collection preserves the historical memory of daily life and manual labour in the local area.

Stepping through the museum’s doors is like embarking on a genuine journey through time. The exhibits span a period from 1800 to the mid-20th century (1960), a crucial transitional era preceding the advent of modern industrialisation.

The beauty of this collection lies in its layout: the spaces are divided into evocative ‘thematic corners’ that recreate, with scientific accuracy and human warmth, the domestic settings and artisan workshops of days gone by.

Wandering through the rooms of the old mill, visitors can explore:

• The domestic sphere: the cosy corner of the kitchen (the true heart of the farmhouse), the cellar-pantry with its preservation secrets, and the intimacy of a bedroom from days gone by.
• The land and the fields: a comprehensive section devoted entirely to the agricultural world, featuring tools that bear witness to the toil and sacred nature of working the land.
• The craft workshops: a tribute to manual craftsmanship through the original tools of the carpenter, bricklayer, cobbler, woodworker and bicycle mechanic (once an indispensable figure for local transport).

• The link with the local area: of particular historical importance are the tools of the peat cutter, a profession inextricably linked to the history of the nearby peat bogs (such as that at Bande di Cavriana).
